The Cleveland Clinic was named the No. 1 hospital in the country for cardiology and heart surgery by the U.S. News & World Report—a distinction it has held since 1995.
“Receiving this honor for 24 consecutive years is a true recognition of our caregivers who compassionately give their time 24/7 and for the patients who have trusted our care as the best hospital for heart care in the country,” Lars Svensson, MD, PhD, chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart & Vascular Institute, said in a press release.
“We are humbled by the many physicians who continue to refer their patients to us, those who choose us for their personal heart care, and rank us as the best place for heart care. This prestigious award encourages us to continue to achieve even better care for our patients, to provide a stress-free experience, and to continue to strive for research and innovation breakthroughs.”

For overall hospital quality, the Mayo Clinic claimed the top spot for the third straight year. The Rochester, Minnesota, hospital was followed by the Cleveland Clinic at No. 2 and Johns Hopkins Hospital at No. 3.
According to a press release, the rankings “are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. Prominent changes to the 2018-19 rankings methodology included more emphasis on patient outcomes and patient experience measures.”
Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston was recognized as the top center for children’s cardiology and heart surgery, followed by Boston Children’s Hospital, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital/Michigan Medicine (Ann Arbor) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
