Cardiologist turns years of experience into a book, covering everything from heart attacks to COVID-19

Gregory Chapman, MD, a veteran cardiologist and professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has written a new book of essays and patient vignettes that draws from his three decades on the job.

The book, “A Strong & Steady Pulse: Stories from a Cardiologist,” is aimed at both everyday readers and other healthcare professionals. Each chapter is modeled after a real-life patient encounter, starting with the initial visit and then taking readers through the entire process.

Chapman covered several key topics in the book, including heart attacks, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, broken heart syndrome, depression and more. COVID-19 and its impact on patient care even get discussed in the book’s epilogue.

“Writing this book has been gratifying and meaningful work,” Chapman said in a news release from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “I have always used my stories as teaching tools in this profession, so I decided to put them into book form. My purpose through this book is to share beneficial cardiovascular and medical information with caregivers, patients and trainees, so they can better understand cardiac disease and contributing risk factors.”
