Amazon has hired Maulik Majmudar, MD, a cardiologist, to be part of its efforts to push into the healthcare industry.
He currently serves as the associate director of the Healthcare Transformation Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. He is also a lecturer and visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Majmudar announced his decision to join Amazon on Twitter, calling it a “very emotional day.” While his exact position at Amazon is still unclear, he will leave a long career as a clinician and academic to pursue an “exciting and challenging role” at Amazon, his Aug. 20 tweet read.
“The one and only reason I am taking on this opportunity, is the possibility of making a truly meaningful impact on the health and wellbeing of hundreds of millions of individuals throughout the world,” Majmudar concluded.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced a partnership with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase to collectively reduce the healthcare costs of employees and announced surgeon Atul Gawande, MD, as CEO. Amazon also announced its acquisition of online pharmacy PillPack.
Majmudar currently also serves as a medical advisor to Bioforumis and HILABSINC.
