International cardiologists all over the world will be performing live chronic total occlusion (CTO) and bifurcation procedures on Thursday, May 6, as part of CTO Live Aid, a charity initiative designed to raise money for Doctors Without Borders.
CTO Live Aid began in 2020 with a focus on raising money for the International Red Cross as it worked to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in its second year, the event will include a total of 26 different specialists performing live for an audience made up exclusively of other healthcare professionals.
All patients have provided consent for their procedures to be viewed live online.
Khaldoon Alaswad, MD, director of the cath lab at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, was the only U.S. cardiologist who performed live during 2020’s CTO Live Aid event. He will be participating again in 2021.
“The first CTO Live Aid in July 2020 was an incredible success,” Alaswad said in a prepared statement. “It was an honor to be part of enhancing the education of cardiologists around the world while supporting the International Red Cross.”
