Maquet acquires Avalons catheter
Maquet Cardiopulmonary, a branch of Maquet Cardiovascular that provides extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal life support (ECLS) systems, has signed an agreement with Avalon Laboratories to acquire its catheter product and complimentary vascular access kits for use during ECMO and ECLS.

The catheter, under the trademark name Avalon Elite Bi-Caval Dual Lumen Catheter, is indicated for simultaneous venous drainage and reinfusion of blood via the internal jugular vein during extracorporeal life support procedures. The catheter is designed to increase the efficiency of blood gas exchange by draining blood from both the upper and lower body while re-infusing it into the heart, according to the company.

The catheter received 510(k) clearance from the FDA and the CE Mark in 2009.

Rastatt, Germany-based Maquet offers a cannula product line that includes a single lumen cannula line and a conventional double lumen pediatric cannulae. Avalon Laboratories, of Rancho Dominguez, Calif., is a supplier of wire-reinforced catheters and cannulae.

Under the agreement announced May 29, Avalon Elite products will be available through Maquet’s global sales and distribution channels as well as through existing Avalon distributors.
