The American Heart Association (AHA) has updated its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations in light of the new Omicron variant, advising that all adults and children ages five years and older should be vaccinated as soon as possible. In addition, the AHA backs the CDC's recommendation that all eligible adults seek out a vaccine booster dose.
“With the Omicron variant spreading, we urge everyone five and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and get the booster when they are eligible," AHA President Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, MD, said in a prepared statement. "The booster shots are particularly important for adults ages 50 and older who have underlying medical conditions or any adult living in a long-term care facility."
The AHA also showed its continued support of the CDC’s safety recommendations, including wearing a mask when indoors and practicing social distancing.
These safety practices are vital to help minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus and reduce the risk of infection, hospitalization, and death, the group emphasized in its statement.
“As the COVID-19 pandemic impacts our families and communities for a second winter and holiday season, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant against the COVID-19 virus,” Lloyd-Jones said. "The COVID-19 vaccines are paramount to saving lives, protecting our families and loved ones against COVID-19 infection, severe illness and death. We urge everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible so that it is a winter filled with joyous memories."
