Mukul Chandra, MD, a veteran cardiologist at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, has died from complications related to COVID-19. He was 57 years old.
Chandra, a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, worked as Miami Valley Hospital’s medical director of cardiac preventive care and research. He was also a professor of medicine at Wright State University in Dayton.
After graduating from the University of Baroda in India, Chandra trained in India, Israel and the United States. He was known through the Dayton area as a respected leader who could speak about the biggest health-related issues of the day.
In April 2020, Chandra received a plasma donation after being hospitalized for COVID-19 and put on a ventilator. His experience inspired potential donors to step forward, as detailed in a press release from the Dayton-based Community Blood Center.
Chandra’s son, Shubham Chandra, spoke to WHIO-TV about his father’s relationship with the city of Dayton.
“He was always thinking of the people of Dayton,” he said. “Their love supported him and carried him, and all of us, through our hardest months.”
