Texas Heart dismisses lawsuit

The Texas Heart Institute dropped its lawsuit against St. Luke’s Health System after signing a partnership agreement.

The Houston-based institute announced that it signed a letter of intent with Catholic Health Initiatives, which in May added St. Luke’s to its system through a transfer by Episcopal Diocese of Texas. Texas Heart Institute, which is adjacent to St. Luke’s Hospital, filed a motion that month in state district court to dissolve a contract with St. Luke’s.

The Episcopal Diocese of Texas has agreed to give Catholic Health Initiatives $50 million for research and education at the institute through a newly created Episcopal Health Foundation. Catholic Health Initiatives also is expected to provide $170 million over the next 10 years for additional research and education in cardiovascular diseases.

The partnership agreement, which is still under negotiation, is scheduled to be completed by Dec. 1.
