Blumenthal calls for more engagement with the healthcare system
At a recent keynote address, “Health Information Exchange: The Next Frontier,” David Blumenthal, MD, the former national coordinator of the Office of National Coordinator for Health IT, challenged the audience to develop a healthcare system that serves every constituent of the U.S. healthcare system from researchers to providers and payors and to the financial community.
He also noted systemic changes occurring in other parts of the world and that the U.S. needs to answer the call to action. His speech, which was held in conjunction with the 2011 NaviNet Healthcare Forum, also held its inaugural chief medical officer (CMO) advisory board meeting at Amelia Island, Fla.
The "Healthcare Forum: Raising the Standard" joined health plan providers and thought leaders to discuss industry trends and challenges and to share best practices and insights. A panel discussion on the impact of innovation and adoption on health IT was led by Peter Tippett, MD. Tippett, board-certified in internal medicine, is vice president of Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions. Tippett has been a proponent of health IT as a means of transforming the delivery of patient care, accelerating innovation, better managing costs, enhancing access to medical care and providing health data privacy.
