Parrillo leaves Cooper Heart for Hackensack chair

Joseph E. Parrillo, MD, has taken the position of chairman of Hackensack University Medical Center’s Heart & Vascular Hospital in Hackensack, N.J.

He previously served as a professor and chairman of the department of medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and director of Cooper Heart Institute at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, N.J. He also established the cardiovascular program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Parrillo has authored or co-authored more than 1,030 publications and has received numerous professional honors and awards such as the Cornell University Medical College Alpha Omega Alpha Award for Teaching Excellence, the Distinguished Clinical Educator Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the NIH Director's Award. The American College of Critical Care Medicine also selected him for its lifetime achievement award in recognition of his contributions to research, education and patient care.

He graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City.
