Aspiration catheter gets cleared in Europe

The Export Advance aspiration catheter, a thrombus removal system, received CE mark and will be launched in Europe and other international markets.

The Export Advance aspiration catheter includes a preloaded stylet to enhance deliverability and kink resistance, and full-wall braiding technology for variable levels of stiffness along the length of the device. The device is made by Minneapolis-based Medtronic.

In the TAPAS (Thrombus Aspiration during Percutaneous coronary intervention in Acute myocardial infarction Study) trial, which was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Export aspiration catheter, researchers reported that thrombus aspiration resulted in a lower mortality at one year in patients treated with the catheter before stenting.

The Export Advance aspiration catheter is not approved for use in the U.S.
